It is a physico-chemical process that occurs for potassium and ammonium in expandable 3-layer clay minerals (e.g., illite, vermiculite, smectite). These cations are specifically sorbed in the interlayer space of the clay minerals due to their charge and diameter. The process is (very slowly) reversible through plant uptake of the ions and weathering.
